A sobering new report about holiday season debt homeowners expect to take with them into 2026 serves as a reminder that renting is the sensible choice in the current landscape. Brand-new apartment building Douglas Enclave is proving to be a saving grace for renters in the Miami market.

Realtor.com, citing data from Point.com, reports that nearly 70% of U.S. homeowners plan to increase holiday season spending and start 2026 with credit card debt. This comes at a time when credit card debt just reached a whopping $1.23 trillion, on top of overwhelming mortgage, property tax, insurance and maintenance costs. Reuters reports that 25% of “buy now, pay later” users are even relying on that method to afford groceries.

“Point.com’s survey makes it clear that more and more homeowners are relying on debt to finance everyday living,” the Realtor.com article states.

“Incomes haven’t kept up with expenses, but they’re not necessarily in a mood to cut back on annual celebrations either,” says Aaron Terrazas, economist for Point and author of the survey.

The survey also found that nearly 1 in 4 American homeowners say that they feel “extremely overwhelmed” by their current level of credit card debt— and this is before holiday spending.

“This shows that rising credit card debt takes a psychological toll, not just a financial one,” explains Terrazas.

As a renter, you can remove the stress of maintenance and other homeownership costs and lock in your monthly rent with an 18-month lease at Douglas Enclave.
